We are delighted to share that our latest paper, “Supermarket Loyalty Card Data for Delivering and Evaluating Dietary Interventions: A Narrative Review“, has been accepted for publication at the International Journal of Population Data Science!
Led by Romana Burgess, the paper explores the role of supermarket loyalty cards in delivering and assessing dietary interventions. We analyse 14 studies using these data within a range of real-world interventions, including an in-situ educational podcast, financial incentives, nudging and behavioural strategies, and individualised feedback.
We identify issues in using loyalty cards to assess interventions, such as displacement effects and missing data, yet we also highlight their strengths: including the ability for longitudinal analysis, capturing whole-basket purchases, and reducing reliance on self-report. In particular, when linked with complementary datasets, supported by retailers, and used to provide personalised feedback, loyalty cards are well positioned as a valuable tool for use within dietary interventions.
