Romana, Alice, Laura and JGI Data Scientist Huw attended We The Curious (WTC) Science Center to host a ‘Meet the Researcher’ event at our ongoing exhibition “Shopping Trolley Secrets” on Saturday the 14th December.
Shopping Trolley Secrets invites the public to walk around an interactive supermarket display, prompting them to select products to add to their own shopping basket. Visitors are asked to consider what a researcher might learn from viewing their shopping basket, and also whether they’d be happy (in theory) to share their shopping data for research.
We themed this researcher event around accessibility of loyalty card data, and invited the public to discuss what information they might like to know about their own shopping data.
The discussions held directly helped us begin to shape our new data visualisation tool (recently funded by the Jean Golding Institute), which is aimed at explaining the power of supermarket shopping data to the public, by making analysis accessible and engaging.
We wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who has walked through and interacted with our exhibit at We The Curious throughout 2024. The engagement has significantly enriched our research, and we couldn’t be more grateful!
